Winter Survival (1 Day)

Crisp air, crunching snow, magical northern lights! Winter in the northern boreal forest is a fascinating season and it is fun to explore Yukon’s backcountry on snowshoes, skis and snowmobiles.

Learn basic survival skills necessary to keep you comfortable and safe during your cold weather adventures!

During this one day course we will take a hard look at some real-life emergencies that have occurred in the northern forests and draw some helpful conclusions from these case studies for our own winter safety and survival. You will learn how to treat an injured person for hypothermia and frostbite, how to reliably start a warming fire in the snow, build a shelter to keep warm during a cold night out, stay hydrated and signal for help. We will also discuss options for pulleys and improvised winch systems to get a buried snow machine or ATV unstuck in deep snow.

  • Survival kits
  • Hypothermia and frostbite
  • Fire starting in cold and snowy conditions
